GDM vs. competitors at a glance

The importance of energy infrastructure management has steadily climbed as the Canadian energy industry landscape evolves over time. Until recent years, few solutions were available to those working in this part of the industry, but the development of new technology has caught up and better alternatives are now available.

For example, legacy systems provide basic functionality needed to manage IMPs, but they come at a high cost with little return on investment. They also access problematic, public data meaning the analytical tools they provide, no matter how technical, do not necessarily provide the best outcomes from which to base critical business decisions.

GDM understands that you’re only as good as the data you use, and if your analysis is based on problematic data, chances are you will have problematic results. The same runs true for legacy technology that lacks the transparency and flexibility needed by the industry today.

Use the comparison chart below to see how GDM compares to alternative systems. Although it’s more comfortable to keep your current system in place, you will save on the cost of ongoing investment and maintenance by making the switch to GDM.

Frequently asked questions

  • GDM provides trusted industry data that includes the most complete energy infrastructure data (current and historical) available across Canada.
  • Because most companies already access this information, data consistency and continuity are ensured across teams.
  • GDM experts and data analysts continuously vet and correct data.
  • GDM’s data can be integrated with any company’s proprietary information for a clearer picture of how their assets are connected to the network, adding an extra layer of comprehension.
  • Converge has an easy to use, intuitive interface that provides transparency at an affordable price.

GDM gets our data from a vast number of sources where we vet and correct the data when necessary, as well as fill in any gaps, or extend and improve it. We then release the new or updated information daily, weekly, and monthly.

  • GDM updates and tracks regulatory approvals and amendments daily.
  • Pipeline operators who add additional information that is not specifically required for regulatory licensing.

All energy infrastructure data goes through our data quality framework which is a process we developed over the past 25+ years. This includes our experienced team of data analysts ensuring spatial accuracy and completeness of the energy infrastructure data.

Our data includes the following categories, but this is not a comprehensive list as more data is continually added:

  • Surface: Survey boundaries, transportation routes, municipalities, and First Nations.
  • Documents: Regulatory approvals, survey plans, and disclosure documents.
  • Environmental: Wildfire, landuse, and incidents.
  • Risk: Pipeline crossings, landslide susceptibility, and high consequence areas.
  • Base Map: Topographic, satellite imagery, and OpenStreetMap.
  • Contact us to learn more about how data is added.
  • GDM has developed precalculated, out-of-the-box benchmarks across Western Canada to identify risk to serve as the starting point for analysis. These precalculated values include risk for pipelines (composite and steel, and water crossings).
  • Our water crossings are prioritized based on Strahler Stream Order and pipeline characteristics.
  • GDM’s data management infrastructure is flexible and transparent. As energy infrastructure is added or amended, the risk information and calculations are automatically updated.
  • GDM has regular meetings with our Product Advisory Board, comprised of industry experts, and many of our customers’ peers.
